Lefty is a retro 2D platformer based around the simple idea of "what would happen if all of a sudden, a right-handed person was forced to become left-handed". But what if the player was forced to become a Lefty too?
The overall concept and demo was created in just under two weeks
A retro, 16-bit aesthetic inspired by the Sega Genesis and 90's gaming
I drew and animated the main character in pixel art using Aseprite
The game is designed to be played with only the left-hand while using a controller to simulate what a right-handed person that becomes left-handed would endure as a challenge
Levels oriented towards the left; challenges are harder while the player moves to the left than towards the right
Lefty was designed to be played with a controller and the controls are all mapped to be used solely with the left hand.
The D-Pad allows to move Lefty around
The Left-Trigger is used to Jump
The Pause menu is accessed via the "View" button on a Xbox Series X controller
Further abilities in the game would use the Left-Bumper held down along with the press of a direction on the D-Pad
This control scheme breaks the mold and creates a new, unique experience to players
The level design and the intensity curve is built into the theme directly.
Challenges while going to the right are easier, traps are easy to avoid, etc.
Meanwhile, going to the left is always a challenge; more enemies, tighter jump windows to avoid traps, etc.
See Lefty in action now!
